Statistical Machine Translation Being Used by a

Government Organization for the First Time

NLP Technologies has been awarded a long term contract for the translation of decisions of an important government organization.

Government organizations are responsible for relating information regarding their activities to the public. Each year a significant number of decisions are published stemming from various government tribunals. In Quebec, documents are published in French; however parties retain the right to request documents in English.

NLP Technologies is the developer of statistical machine translation software tailored to the treatment of legal documents. Known as TRANSLI™ (Translation of legal information), this innovative technology approaches translation through the use of language recognition functions and legal terminology databases to provide contextual consistency in a time-efficient manner. The translated documents are then reviewed by an editorial board to ensure accuracy and quality of content. The software is based on the post-doctoral studies of NLP’s founder, which led to the development of automated summarization software that revolutionized the concept of document analysis.

In September 2008, NLP Technologies collaborated with different federal and provincial courts in a pilot project to determine the viability of using machine translation for governmental purposes. The results far exceeded the expectations of the courts and tribunals, illustrating the potential to manage and translate high volumes of documents while maintaining contextual accuracy and reducing production time.

It will be the first time a Quebec governmental organization will be using a technological solution for the translation of legal documents. This groundbreaking event potentially marks a shift from traditional translation resources towards a new era of time-efficient technological solutions.
