Historical background of University Tower
Our new building, University Tower, has been part of Montreal’s inviting landscape since 1929. There was a time when Montreal was the industrial and financial center of Canada; as testified by the many skyscrapers built at the turn of the 20th century. For more than 100 years, municipal bills have come to limit the height of Montreal’s skyscrapers. The first one limited skyscrapers to 10 floors and was in place until in the early 30’s. Then a new bill increased that limit to 33 floors. The latter bill, which is still in place, stipulates that Mount Royal is the ultimate limit for Montreal’s skyscrapers. The 1,000 de la Gauchetière Building came within 10 meters of reaching that limit in 1992.
Twenty floors (overground): 56 m
Architect: Harold Lea Fetherstonhaugh
Year of construction (end): 1929
